School Council
Glyn Derw has become only the 3rd secondary school in Cardiff to achieve the Eco-Schools Green Flag. The Eco-Schools programme is an international initiative that encourages pupils to engage with environmental and sustainable development issues. Pupils take key roles in decision making and participation in order to reduce the environmental impact of their school. In this way, Eco-Schools extends learning beyond the classroom and develops responsible citizenship attitudes both at home and in the wider community.
Well done to the Eco-School team for all their hard work

ICT MARK - Another first for Glyn Derw
15 July 2011: Glyn Derw became the first secondary school in Cardiff to have their ICT Mark revalidated. The ICT Mark is a nationally accredited, quality mark that recognises schools who can demonstrate the use of ICT to support all learners across the curriculum. Schools must show evidence that they have harnessed technology to improve learning and teaching, efficiently manage education, extend opportunities for learning and improve communications with parents and the wider community. In 2008 Glyn Derw became the first secondary school in Cardiff to achieve the ICT Mark. The ICT Mark demonstrates Glyn Derw’s commitment to improving the quality the teaching and learning via the use of ICT.

ITV Visit

ITV Wales News presenter Andrea Benfield visited Glyn Derw yesterday to give a presentation on working in the media. Year 9 media studies pupils were given an insight into the steps that she took to get into the media. It certainly wasn’t an easy passage but provided that you’re dedicated, work hard and persevere then you’ll certainly be successful.

Glyn Derw would like to thank Andrea and ITV Wales for the inspiring talk.

Kids Connecting Classrooms

A group of Glyn Derw pupils in Year 8 represented Wales and the UK in an international competition called ‘Kids Creating Content’. The competition involved the pupils creating an engaging and dynamic lesson on the topic of Cardiff Castle.

The pupils were then given the challenge of delivering this lesson to a group of pupils in another school across the Atlantic through the use videoconferencing technology.
The Year 9 pupils in Skowhegan Middle School in Maine were impressed with the lesson and enjoyed the experience. It was the schools first time being involved with the competition and will enter again next year.
The competition has helped put Glyn Derw on the map and create partnerships with schools across North America.

Year 8 pupils are taking part in a new project called Connecting Classrooms in East Asia that is being run by the British Council. As part of the project Glyn Derw has linked up with An Duong Secondary School in Hanoi, Vietnam. The project will enable pupils to exchange information and ideas to help create today's Global Citizens for Tomorrow's World.
